It was rumored for months that Apple had something prepared in this regard, and although it has taken a little longer than expected here we have the new MacBook Air , which comes with important hardware improvements but above all with a change that defines a trend in Apple.

It is the integration of the “new old keyboard” with the scissor system that replaces the butterfly mechanism that gave Apple so many problems in the past. The MacBook Air reinforces Apple’s catalog of notebooks with welcome improvements, but it does so with a curious direct competitor: the iPad Pro that has just been introduced with trackpad support.

One of the great novelties of these equipment in addition to the keyboard with a scissor mechanism is this renewal of its processors. While the models that appeared in mid-2018 had the Intel Core i5-8210Y (2 cores, 4 threads, 14nm, 7W TDP) of the Amber Lake-Y family, now Apple is making the leap to the new Ice Lake .

As usual, Apple does not indicate this in its product specifications , but with the data it offers, it is feasible to bet on the presence of three different processor models from the range that Intel launched in the third quarter of 2019 and that belong to a family. which stands out for the 10 nm lithography .

With the hints that the manufacturer offers, it would probably be the Intel Core i3-1000G4 , the Core i5-1035G4 and the Core i7-1065G7 (or perhaps the Core i7-1060G7 , neither of them works at 1.2 GHz base that Apple talks about). In all of them we have an integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics GPU .

Storage gains integers, too, and starting configurations now offer twice the capacity of previous MacBook Air models. It is possible to integrate SSD drives of up to 2TB, while RAM can reach 16GB, a very interesting option although it increases the price by 250 euros .

Why change a design that is already iconic?

When the first MacBook Air came out of that envelope in its official presentation in 2008, it already created a clear trend in the design of ultralight equipment. That wedge format has been maintained in different product generations, and remains a constant in the new model.

The exterior design does not change from previous models: the screen had already significantly reduced the frames in previous reviews and we return to the traditional gold, space gray and silver colors in these models.

That wedge design is 16.1mm thick at its widest, something that might make you think a wider selection of ports is possible. However, Apple continues to bet on minimalism in this product, and we simply have two USB-C ports with a Thunderbolt 3 interface on one side, as well as a headphone port on the opposite side.

The design also has an array of three microphones that help capture voice more clearly for video conferencing with FaceTime —the webcam, yes, it is still the same with 720p quality according to Apple— and the sound section is completed with the stereo speaker integration.

The keyboard as a great attraction

There are many issues that the famous butterfly keyboards have given MacBook users in recent times, and Apple gave up on the launch of its 16-inch MacBook Pro a few months ago.

There it returned to integrate some keyboards that replaced that mechanism by a more traditional scissor system but adapted to new models.

That same decision has been for the new MacBook Air, which have the “new Magic Keyboard”, with a redesigned scissor mechanism that offers a 1 mm travel for the keys and that among other things has the cursor keys organized in inverted “T” shape.

These keyboards also have a fingerprint sensor integrated in their upper right that takes advantage of the famous Touch ID technology . As indicated in the official announcement , that sensor works in conjunction with the Apple T2 Security Chip, which also protects the boot process and provides real-time encryption of the content stored in the storage system.

MacBook Air (2020) price and availability

The new MacBook Air (2020) are available today in two different configurations that allow access to different features:

  • MacBook Air with Intel Core i3 dual-core CPU and 256 GB SSD: 1,199 euros
  • MacBook Air with Intel Core i5 quad-core CPU and 512 GB SSD: 1,499 euros

To these models can be added optional improvements that allow the RAM to be expanded to 16 GB, the SSD to 2 TB and the processor to the Intel Core i7 quad-core at 1.2 GHz.
