Curious the move of Apple this year. Curious and with something of déjà vu with an extra model of smartphone that adds with lower price and more colors to the “iPhone senior”, and is the one that we will reel today in the analysis of the iPhone XR, the one-camera, the one of the colors.

A phone that a priori is quite juicy who intends to acquire a flagship to give much of what incorporate their older brothers at a lower price, and with the addition of reaching an audience that seeks more casual finishes without prioritizing the double camera ( now that it’s almost a thing of the past). The last processor of Apple with a somewhat different design and intermediate dimensions between one brother and another, we tell you how it behaves.

Design: a twin with aluminum aluminum edges and notorious frames

Last year Apple still gave a last breath to the aesthetic stoic that the iPhone manifested on its front from the first model in 2007 with the iPhone 8. Small variations like the Home button, which evolved to Touch ID with the iPhone 5S, or the diagonal increase that was seen from the iPhone 5 (with what was the great leap to brand level with the Plus models), the frames were notorious in Apple’s smartphones until the iPhone X came and said: we have not already fed up

Thus, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were the last vestige of those frames and the iPhone XR, despite being the “smallest” or the “most basic”, already incorporates the front with notch. Of course, as we said in the first impressions are frames thicker than those of his brothers, about 4.17 millimeters.

But symmetrical; here Apple is still unique in its kind and rewarding the friends of the TOC, without disparity in the thickness between horizontal and vertical frames as we usually see in manufacturers who have opted for a similar design. Although there is a small breach of the absolute symmetry that often characterizes Apple’s designs with a Lightning that is not aligned to the center of the edge, but is somewhat closer to the screen.

Rear glass and metal frames also for this iPhone, but the steel turns aluminum on the edges of it. The feeling, despite this, is very similar to the one we have holding the iPhone X or the XS, although it is somewhat thicker and according to our sensitivity to weight we can notice those approximately 20 grams more than it has on these two phones, being more bulky than them and even that the iPhone XS Max to be thicker (having a lower diagonal screen).

Height (mm) Width (mm) Grosor (mm) Weight (grams) Screen (inches) Battery (mAh) Surface Volume
iPhone 8 138,4 67,3 7,3 148 4,7 1.821 93,14 67,996
iPhone 8 Plus 158,4 78,1 7,5 202 5,5 2.691 123,71 92,78
iPhone X 143,6 70,9 7,7 174 5,8 2.716 101,81 78,396
iPhone XR 150,9 75,7 8,3 194 6,1 2.942 114,23 94,82
iPhone XS 143,6 70,9 7,7 177 5,8 2.658 101,81 78,396
iPhone XS Max 157,5 77,4 7,7 208 6,5 3.174 121,91 93,87

It is interesting to see how volumes and diagonals have changed in Apple compared to last year. The brand is not characterized precisely by the design changes, and between 2017 and 2018 we have seen four sizes and two “and a half” designs.

What happens to us a bit with the appearance of the iPhone XR is that it reminds us somewhat of that iPhone 5C, which came with its plastic and its colors to revolutionize Apple Store stands and who could not conceive that a smartphone of the brand would return to polycarbonate (with a configuration that involved carrying an “old” equipment). But in this case probably with a much better taste for that audience more demanding with the materials and without having to renounce the progress in hardware of the brand.

The iPhone XR is also a glass sandwich, with matt aluminum on its edges and IP67 resistance certification.
It’s not that the plastic is something negative, but it implies not supporting wireless charging and not being fashionable, and the iPhone XR is also a glass sandwich with matt aluminum on its edges. And it should also be pointed out that in this case it does not have IP68 certification, but IP67.

Borders that communicate with what we see on the iPhone from the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and that draw a perfect semi-circumference aligned with the rear and front windows. There are no protrusions or reliefs between these surfaces and this gives a feeling of continuity that is usually appreciated (especially when gripping with one hand).

It also does not slip and eye, the glass is very clean unlike what we usually see when you use this material. Of course, the bulge of the camera is striking, and being made of aluminum may be more susceptible to scratches or pitting.

Well finished and built, there is a good compaction work, although not as much as we see in other rival smartphones this year, which have a smaller volume on the same screen. Even with slightly larger batteries or diagonals, like the LG G7 ThinQ or the Xiaomi Mi 8.

Height (mm) Width (mm) Grosor (mm) Weight (grams) Screen (inches) Battery (mAh) Volume (cc)
iPhone XR 150,9 75,7 8,3 194 6,1 2942 94,81
LG G7 ThinQ 153,2 71,9 7,9 162 6,1 3000 87,02
Xiaomi Mi 8 154,9 74,8 7,6 179 6,21 3300 88,06
POCO F1 155,5 75,2 8,8 182 6,18 4000 102,9
Pixel 3 XL 158 76,7 7,9 184 6,3 3430 95,74

There is then no big difference with your brothers or feelings when it comes to the iPhone XS: aluminum instead of steel and dimensions that are closer to what are now small (until there is a new SE, if there is). The tray for the SIM is on the right side in the lower part and there is no Home button: we will see later, but the interaction is based again on the gestures and the three physical buttons, leaving the 3D Touch on the way.

Screen: with IPS we have hit (again)

Apple has its history with almost perennial front, but with the type of screen (and its resolution) also came to set a precedent with an IPS panel that maintained by much AMOLED that prevailed in the competition. That changed with the iPhone X and has been extended with the XS, but the third discord has touched an IPS panel with its 326 pixels per inch.

It is an iPhone perhaps more affordable that offers to give up less “modernity” than required to opt for an iPhone 8 or 7 at the time, with the incentive that is available in more colors, thus probably fitting in the preferences of more people. But it is also taking half of the photographic progress of Apple in recent years and a screen with a considerable edge compared to the X and the XS.
