The singular Nintendo Switch is still a prodigious success for the Japanese giant of video games. In its latest financial results this company has indicated that in the last quarter it has sold 3.19 million units, which makes the total since its launch amount to 22.86 million Nintendo Switch sold, more than 21.74 million of GameCube that were sold throughout the history of this device.
Those good figures when compared to the GameCube are not so if we look at the goal of Nintendo. The company plans to sell 20 million consoles in its fiscal year, and in the middle of that year it has sold 5.07 million units. That means that this “Christmas” quarter should be spectacular in sales, since the first quarter of 2019 is expected to be modest in sales.
Good numbers, but far from the best Nintendo consoles
In the last quarter of 2017 Nintendo sold 7.23 million consoles, a fantastic figure that will nevertheless have to surpass in a remarkable way in the last three months of 2018 if it wants to reach those objectives: it seems almost impossible for the Nintendo Switch to finish the game. fiscal year with that goal of 20 million units sold, but at Nintendo have not reviewed that objective for now.
Maybe the “Switch fever” has relaxed slightly, but the truth is that the console has been a revulsive for the company and the industry. Even having already surpassed the Wii U (which only sold 13.56 million units in its history) and the GameCube, the Switch is still far from overcoming many of its predecessors, whose sales figures are really spectacular.
It will therefore be interesting to see what moves Nintendo makes to boost those sales in this Christmas quarter, and the firm may take advantage of offering special packs and even discounts that allow it to reach a really ambitious goal. Nintendo Switch Online could also help here, but that may not be enough.
